Cricket Council USA launches Broward County MAQ T20 Tournament

Coconut Creek Cricket Club winds inaugural President day tournament

Cricket Council USA (CCUSA) launched the inaugural edition of Broward County MAQ T20 tournament with much fanfare at the Central Broward Regional Park(CBRP) cricket stadium on February 17, 2013. Chris Paras, CCUSA President, welcomed all the teams. MAQ Qureshi urged the players to utilize this opportunity to play in the stadium and Rizwan Mohammed, President of Florida Southeast Cricket League, thanked CCUSA and MAQ for promoting cricket and giving a chance for his teams to play in this inaugural tournament. Duncan Finch, park manager for CBRP, pledged his full support to the Broward County MAQ T20  tournament. The Presidents day tournament featured eight teams from Florida Southeast Cricket League. All teams played one game inside the stadium and another game on the outside fields at CBRP. The tournament sponsor, MAQ, wanted to give  local teams the opportunity to play inside the stadium, so all local cricketers can play at this ICC certified stadium in Lauderhill, Florida. A total of 8 games was played amongst the following teams: Florida International, Toofan, Coconut Creek, Warriors, Kendall Stars, United Eleven, US Cricket Academy, and World Wide Cricket Academy.

The tournament featured many exciting games. The game between United Eleven and Kendall Stars was tied at the end of 20 Overs and the teams played a super over to decide the winner of this game. The tournament winner, Coconut Creek, won both games handily. In the first game Coconut Creek beat Florida International by 4 wickets. In the final game of the tournament, Coconut Creek beat Florida Warriors by 10 wickets. Coconut Creek’s bowling attack went through the Warriors batting lineup in a methodical fashion. First, Salah Uddin provide to vital breakthrough to remove the in-form batsman, Umair Zikar. Wickets then fell at regular intervals with both Sauid Drepaul and Huda Mohammed accounting for 4 wickets each. Warriors  folded up for 62 runs with Farhat Ullah providing lone resistance with a contribution of 20 runs. Coconut Creek knocked off the required runs in 7.1 overs with both openers, Farhan Samana and Asif Motiwala playing watchful and responsible knocks to help Coconut Creek register a comprehensive victory and win their first tournament in over 2 years.

The other standout team, Kendall Stars, also won 2 games but lost to the eventual winner, Coconut Creek, on net run rate. Kendall Stars skipper, Usman Malik, was adjudged Tournament MVP for 2 brilliant 50’s and haul of 6 wickets. His last ball heroics against United Eleven where Usman hit a six, enabled Kendall Stars to tie the game with United Eleven and helped his team to win in the super over.
